Finally, CSMMU clinic gets moolah support

LUCKNOW: The world No Tobacco Day brought the much needed succour to the tobacco cessation clinic at CSM Medical University. The clinic was being run without financial aid after g rants from world Health organization lapsed in December 2009. During a progamme held to mark the occasion on Monday at the general surgery department vice-chancellor Saroj Chooramani Gopal announced a grant of Rs 2.5 lakh will be paid by the university.
‘‘The clinic played an important role in assisting people to quit tobacco. Since the term of the World Health Organisation got over last year there was crisis of funds to run the clinic,’’ said Dr Ramakant, coordinator of the clinic and head of the general surgery department at the University. Dr Ramakant gave a detailed presentation about the clinic and its activities. He narrated how doctors, psychiatrists and technicians help people to quit tobacco. The clinic was set up nine years back and was getting grants form the world Health Organisation. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the world. It kills up to 50 per cent of its users,’’ said Dr Vinod Jain, secretary of the Lucknow College of Surgeons.
